The Science of Consciousness
Where ancient wisdom meets the frontiers of science
Decoding the Invisible

Inside the experiential breakthroughs redefining what the human mind can do

As artificial intelligence reshapes our world at unprecedented speed, a quiet revolution is unfolding in neuroscience labs from Harvard to Sydney. Scientists are discovering that human consciousness operates on principles far more sophisticated than any algorithm.

Some of these are principles that ancient contemplative traditions have also explored for millennia.
At the Institute of Absolute Intelligence, we stand at the intersection of these two streams of knowledge. We have seen first hand the experiences our practitioners report—reading blindfolded, intuitive insights, expanded awareness, profound clarity.

We are also exploring these phenomena through the lens of science. What is actually happening? When a child is trained in intuitive abilities, what changes happen in the brain.
When they use intuitive abilities, what are the mechanics involved on the level of neural pathways?
What are the most important questions, and how do we explore them together?

We are reaching a place where these observable phenomena are no longer relegated to the realm of the unexplainable. Today’s neuroscience is starting to reveal insights into the measurable mechanisms behind these states, from brain network reorganization during deep meditation to the neural signatures of intuitive decision-making.

This convergence matters now more than ever. As we navigate an AI-saturated world, understanding the full spectrum of human intelligence—including capacities that transcend computation—becomes essential to our collective future.

The Institute's Scientific Approach

The Institute of Absolute Intelligence engages with consciousness research through a unique lens: exploring how accessing deeper states of awareness can measurably enhance human capability and well-being.

Our approach draws on several key areas of scientific inquiry. Global Workspace Theory, developed by cognitive scientists Bernard Baars and Stanislas Dehaene, explains consciousness as the brain’s ability to “broadcast” information across vast neural networks, making it globally available for processing. This framework helps explain how intuitive insights—processed unconsciously in specialized brain regions—suddenly become available to conscious awareness, creating those “aha” moments our practitioners frequently experience.

Where Meditation Meets Neuroscience

We’re particularly interested in advanced meditation research emerging from institutions like Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. Using cutting-edge neuroimaging technology, researchers are documenting profound changes in brain activity during deep meditative states, including alterations in the brain stem, cerebellum, and prefrontal cortex. These studies validate what contemplative traditions have long known: systematic practice can fundamentally reshape how consciousness operates.

The Institute also explores the neuroscience of intuition—what researchers now understand as rapid, unconscious pattern recognition informed by accumulated experience. Studies using EEG technology demonstrate that the brain can detect and respond to patterns before conscious awareness, offering scientific grounding for what we call “gut feelings.”

In our framework, absolute intelligence refers to this deeper substrate of consciousness—the capacity for direct knowing, pattern recognition, and insight that operates beyond deliberate thought. Modern neuroscience is beginning to map these processes, revealing them not as mystical phenomena but as sophisticated functions of the human nervous system.

Featured Research: Exploring the Science of Consciousness

Here’s what we’re exploring. Thought-provoking articles on the science and nature of consciousness.

Advanced Meditation Alters Consciousness and Our Basic Sense of Self

Scientific American | Harvard Medical School & Massachusetts General Hospital

Harvard researchers used powerful seven-tesla MRI technology to study advanced meditators during jhana practice, creating detailed maps of brain activity across the cortex, brain stem, and cerebellum. The study identified distinctive neural patterns during deep absorption states, including correlations with joy, mental ease, and formlessness—the sensation of the body boundary dissolving. In a separate study, scientists documented “cessation events” during meditation, where consciousness temporarily suspends entirely, followed by profound mental clarity and renewal.

Key Insight
”Advanced meditation may help inspire people and provide deep insight and clarity about how to achieve meaning in life.”

Connection to Our Work
These findings hint at the transformative experiences reported by practitioners of our Intuitive Life Scan and demonstrate the measurable neurological changes that occur through systematic practice.

Measuring Intuition: EEG Evidence for Predictive Consciousness

Frontiers in Neuroscience | Fudan University

Researchers developed a novel multi-layer brain network analysis method to study how intuition operates in real-time decision-making. Using EEG technology during simulated driving scenarios, they discovered that the brain shows distinctive patterns up to one second before a potential collision occurs—essentially “knowing” danger before conscious awareness. The study achieved 87.5% accuracy in predicting collision perception, demonstrating that intuition can be measured, quantified, and even enhanced through training.

Key Insight
”Intuition is a dynamic cognitive process involving rapid collaboration and reorganization among cerebral regions, and it can be enhanced through specific training.”

Connection to Our Work
This research provides empirical evidence for intuitive capabilities. These are the capabilities we develop through the Intuition Process, showing that accessing pre-conscious information is a trainable skill grounded in measurable brain function.

Consciousness in Artificial Intelligence: What Current Systems Lack

arXiv Research Paper | Multi-Institutional Study

A comprehensive analysis assessed existing AI systems against leading neuroscientific theories of consciousness, including Global Workspace Theory, recurrent processing theory, and higher-order theories. The researchers derived computational “indicator properties” from these theories to evaluate whether current AI systems meet the criteria for consciousness. The conclusion: no current AI systems satisfy these indicators, though there are no obvious technical barriers to building systems that could.

Key Insight
The analysis reveals fundamental differences between artificial computation and biological consciousness.

Connection to Our Work
This research reinforces our central premise that human consciousness—a certain substratum of which we call absolute intelligence—operates on principles that transcend algorithmic processing, representing a form of intelligence that precedes and underlies artificial systems.
